Subject: Strict Measures Against IUU Fishing
Dear Vessel Owners and Operators, As the President and CEO of Vanuatu Logistics and Administrative Services Limited (VLAS), I wish to address a matter of utmost importance concerning our commitment to sustainable fishing practices and compliance with international regulations. VLAS will not tolerate any involvement in Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing by vessels registered under the Vanuatu International Shipping Registry (VISR). Engaging in such activities not only jeopardizes the reputation of our registry but also poses significant risks to the marine ecosystem and the livelihoods of legitimate fishing enterprises.
Effective immediately, the following measures will be implemented:
1. *Fines*: Any vessel found to be involved in IUU fishing will incur fines of up to $75,000. This penalty reflects the seriousness with which we regard compliance and the need to uphold the integrity of our registry.
2. *Unilateral Deletion from the Registry*: In addition to fines, vessels that engage in IUU fishing may face unilateral deletion from the VISR. This action will be taken to protect the interests of responsible vessel operators and to maintain the reputation of Vanuatu as a flag state committed to sustainable fishing practices.
We urge all vessel owners and operators to adhere strictly to all fishing regulations and to conduct their operations responsibly. It is imperative that we work together to ensure the sustainability of our fisheries and the protection of our marine resources.
